anesthesia and you
53what do you need to ask the anesthesia provider before surgery?
Anesthesia is a complex process where a highly skilled provider delivers either injectable or inhalation agents to ensure complete loss of awareness, pain, and sensation. It is very important to ask the provider what drugs will be given to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction. It is also important to tell them if anyone in your family has ever had any anesthesia complication. Many reactions are genetic (Malignant Hyperthermia for example). If you don't know what medications cause reactions in you, a severe consequence may occur when you are under anesthesia and unable to tell the provider. In short, always tell the provider what medications or substances cause allergic reactions in you or your family so you can have a safe anesthesia event.
